Loved the film! Admire the staff & fell in love w/ the students! Googled school address to send donation but the NY Daily News (11.16.11) reports the Archdiocese closed the school after 150yrs in spring 2011. So saddened to learn that. Declining enrollment was an issue.
Thanks for the great film. Perhaps it may still inspire other schools and/or parents to keep music in curriculum.

Wow, this is an excellent demonstration how children can learn, how teachers can teach and it is all based on the rhythms found in music as in life. I really enjoyed this one. I liked thefact that there was one teacher doing a basic form of meditation with these young students, too. Keep it up.

Something Within Me

The teachers and Principal at St. Augustine's school, located in the poorest section of the South Bronx have committed to a curriculum where the arts, especially music, are treated with the importance of any academic subject.

In the last six years, enrollment has tripled and reading and math scores have improved dramatically.

Something Within Me features interviews with students, teachers and parents along with an private peek into the classrooms and rehearsals of St. Augustine's.
